Built-in set of cabinets for the sunroom. Contains four storage drawers along the bottom, a tall hanging coat closet with door, and 7 open shelves. The shelves are staggered in depth: some come flush with the front of the closet, while others are set back. Completed November 2021.
Starting point: mostly ¾" poplar veneer core plywood. Some ¼" birch VC for the backs and ½" birch VC for the drawers. Gluing up the carcass of the bottom cabinet. Closeup on cabinet bottom dados. Gluing up the carcass of the right-side shelves. Dry fitting the left-side coat closet cabinet to the bottom drawer unit. Dry fitting both sides together with the bottom. Checking fit against the wall. Discovered the floor was significantly out of level in both directions, so the cabinet feet need to be shimmed to accomodate. Finishing the solid Walnut butcher-block bench top using gloss oil-based polyurethane. First coat of paint (Benjamin Moore Advance) applied and sanded. Second coat of paint (Benjamin Moore Advance) applied and bench-top attached using stainless steel screws in slots (to allow for wood movement). Drawer boxes built out of ½" birch plywood getting clearcoated with General Finishes High Performance. Drawer boxes mounted into the cabinet carcass using side-mount ball bearing slides. Coat closet door, drawer fronts, and hardware mounted. Final piece, the back panel, is made of 1x3 poplar and ¼" birch plywood and finished the same as the rest of the unit. Finished.
